FSL Retention and Recruitment
Professional Learning Series – Supporting our FSL Teachers
The FSL context requires a solid understanding of the best practices that can support student confidence, proficiency and achievement in French as a Second Language. Many new teachers often feel isolated as they work within unique environments. Current supports within school boards often rely on generalist expertise through learning coaches. Even Principals, who are positioned as the instructional leader within the school, often have a very limited understanding of how to support new teachers in the FSL context.
The videos, learning guides and webinars created for this project include three modules intended to provide principals, NTIP leaders, learning coaches and mentors with tools that can be used immediately in supporting a new FSL teacher. These tools will help empower leaders of all kinds to support new FSL teachers where a specific FSL support person may not be at hand.

This phase of the of FSL Teacher Recruitment and Retention Project will examine how the curriculum strands of listening, speaking, reading and writing are interconnected, but distinct. These four modules will emphasize that students need multiple opportunities to: listen and respond to texts and to others; speak and interact with others; read, view, and respond to a variety of texts; and, write a variety of texts for many different purposes and audiences. Effective instructional strategies and tools that support the FSL curriculum, learner engagement, differentiation, equity, diversity and inclusion will be outlined and shared.
This module will explore the listening strand of the FSL curriculum documents in order to develop language proficiency and confidence for learners. This module will address possible barriers present for educators and learners while participating in listening activities. It will also discuss concrete instructional strategies that will help learners develop listening and interaction skills.
This module is intended to support FSL educators in maximizing oral communication and interaction through high yield low-risk strategies. Learners need to engage in accountable, productive talk to build confidence, develop oral proficiency, and understand how French is used to communicate. This module features instructional insights and concrete, classroom-ready strategies. By explicitly teaching and modeling communication strategies, FSL learners will begin to independently select, use and apply strategies to communicate in the target language.
This module will address the interconnectedness of reading to the learners’ previous knowledge, skills and experiences with listening and speaking. Our learners need to be exposed to a variety of relevant, diverse and authentic text types which represent their level, learning needs and personal identities. By explicitly teaching and modelling reading comprehension strategies and language awareness tools, FSL learners will begin to independently select, use and apply strategies to comprehend and make meaning of what they are reading.
This module is intended to support FSL educators in maximizing written production and interaction through high yield, low-risk strategies. Learners do best when engaging in accountable, productive writing situations that build confidence, develop written proficiency, and understand how French is used to communicate in authentic written situations. With the inclusion of technology in written production and interaction, this module features instructional insights and classroom practices to help educator planning and to support the learner’s independent selection and application of strategies to communicate in the target language.
