10 Significant Shifts in 10 Years: Second Language Teaching and Learning in Canada

Looking back, what are the fundamental changes that have improved the way we teach and learn second languages in Canada over the last 10-15 years? How have these changes empowered second language educators to overcome obstacles that sometimes seem overwhelming? More importantly, how do these shifts empower our students to pursue lifelong learning of second languages? Ten transformations have slowly but surely found their way into second language classrooms across the country, ultimately putting Canada on the world map, in terms of excellence in second language pedagogy. Let’s rediscover or discover for the first time educational revolutions that positively impact the way we teach a second language and how they help us connect our students to the exciting world of bilingualism and beyond. At the end of the day, “We’ve come a long way!” 

 About Lesley Doell

French Program Facilitator, DELF Centre Director, French Resource Centre Director, University Instructor and now National French Immersion Consultant for ACPI, Lesley has held many roles in the world of French language education. She is the former president of the Canadian Association of Immersion Professionals (ACPI) where she spent ten years leading several successful national initiatives pertaining to French Immersion. Lesley holds a Master’s in Education from Centre de recherche en études franco-ontariennes of the University of Toronto in Curriculum and Instruction. She is honored to have been named a Chevalier in the Order of the Academic Palms from the French Republic in 2015 for her work in promoting the French language and culture outside of Quebec. She currently serves as President of the North American Commission (CAN) of the International Federation of French Professors (FIPF) and is an author for Pearson Education. Lesley enjoys sharing her insights and expertise worldwide, as well as at a national, provincial and school district level.  A lifelong learner, Lesley is passionate about promoting bilingualism across Canada.
